A Sense of Place
February 17 – March 28, 2015
Opening Reception:
Friday, February 20, 7 – 9 pm
Artist Statement:
What calls us to become immersed in certain places? It may be a quality of light, spaciousness, a quirky beauty, a tug of memory, surprisingly beautiful color or a refreshing wildness.
Two locations have provided these landscapes – the Dexter area, especially the Huron River, and Leelanau County, including Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore – places I frequent to restore my too urbanized self.
After finding a special place, I usually begin by drawing on site. As the work develops, it helps me understand why I was attracted to that landscape in the first place. Through this understanding I discover a deeper degree of seeing, of discovering and of appreciation.
Painting becomes an opportunity for joy, a joy that grows out of my immersion in the scene, and from the flow and experience of painting. I somehow come to feel that the place becomes mine, that I belong to it and it to me.
I am happy to be sharing a sense of these places with you.
