francesc burgos
work
May 6 – June 14, 2014
Opening Reception:
Friday, May 9, 7 – 10 pm
The pieces found in this show are mostly organic abstractions that evoke aspects of nature, but also of geometry, architecture, music or language.
Ceramics has been, since prehistory, about vessels and as a sculptor and ceramist, Burgos is interested in natural and human-made forms that contain, protect and shape life in its multiplicity of form; a hard wall around an empty space: shells, hulls, buildings…
Having a background in architectural design, he sketches and studies the form in drawings before starting a piece. Sometimes he draws elevations, plans and sections so as to understand how to build the piece and how it will support itself when the clay softens during firing. He often makes small models to study the form or full size templates to be used as a guide during construction.
With roots both in Puerto Rico and Catalonia, Francesc Burgos has experienced life in different countries, different languages and different cultures. He spent his adolescence living in Barcelona, a cosmopolitan and culturally rich city. His aesthetic education was formed during the last decades of Modernism and his work, if not minimalist, remains succinct, elegant and straightforward, even while being playful.
At different times he has worked professionally in illustration, textile design, product design and manufacture and, architectural design. For his own development, he has worked with mobiles and political collage, with photography and experimental short films, designed and built furniture, designed, produced and marketed masks, lighting and jewelry. He has also explored extensively the sculptural possibilities of folded paper.
He has taught at the universities of California (Berkeley), Utah (Salt Lake City) and Michigan (Ann Arbor). These days he makes ceramic and mixed-media sculptures, one of a kind functional work and site-specific installations.
Since his days in Barcelona he has perceived art, in its multiple forms, as the unique expression of a society’s spirit: art can be an agent of deliverance and change, it can exalt and heal the spirit and make the world a better place.
