Artist Statement :

“The process of preparing a sculpture show at the WSG Gallery usually takes me about a year. The process starts with picking a theme, probably the hardest part. There are plenty of ideas in my head for this — the problem is picking one that is attainable. A theme helps me to set bounds and a framework for an exhibit. Yet the concept must be loose enough to allow for discovery and exploration of ideas and techniques. My previous show titles at WSG Gallery have included: Art and Math; Vessels; Springs and Things. 

The theme for this show started with a found piece of #2 copper clad with heavy Teflon. I found the wire while helping my late artist friend, Wendel Heers, clean out his studio. A day later I made a sculpture using the wire, bent into a helix that stuck out of a rock. How fitting: To carry on the love of rocks in sculpture, as Wendel did for years. 

Techniques used in these sculptures are fairly simple: boring stone using core and percussion bits, cutting and grinding stone with diamond saws and abrasives, bending light and heavy copper, welding, machining various metals.
