Artist’s Statement :
Home Range*
“an area over which an animal or group of animals regularly travels in search of food or mates, and one that may overlap with those of neighboring animals or groups of the same species”
This new body of work came about fortuitously and unexpectedly as an illustrated compendium to my winter 2017 journal. It began with representations of my home and life at home, moving on to some exterior observations, culminating in the painted portraits of friends and associates.
I work in a traditional manner standing at an easel, or working on a table with pen, pencil eraser, and/or paint on paper, or stretched canvas, generally small in size due to limited space.
I start from observation, sometimes photographing and drawing or directly painting. With experience, knowledge, tenacity, luck and joy, it will come together. In the end, because making art is mysterious I may have transformed, or even lost, the original idea and moved to an unexpected final interpretation.
