Opening Reception:
Friday, June 19, 7 – 9 pm
The Paper Trail: An Artist’s Journey is an exhibition about Theodore Ramsay’s work as artist and papermaker, while he was teaching and attending papermaking workshops around the world. Materials and techniques of sheet forming reflect the location of the mills he visited, ranging from ancient papermaking villages in Thailand, Myanmar and China, to contemporary mills in Spain, the Netherlands, Australia, Tasmania, Japan and the United States. A select group of artworks made in these locations are shown in this exhibition.
Ramsay’s interest in paper began as a search for unique surfaces on which to draw and paint. This led to studying the history of paper and to acquiring a Hollander beater with which he created his own paper surfaces. As he researched the development and technical processes of paper he realized that he could make art images on, or in, the surface, or even make the paper itself become the art image with unique possibilities beyond his original conceptions. And so the journey began.
